Devotion 1: The Lord Promises the Bible Is Truthful
Pastor Patrick Bicknell

“Truth” is such a distorted thing in the world we live in today. One of the most common things I see our culture pushing is for people to “live their truth.” What they mean by saying these things is they believe that whatever someone thinks to be the truth is the truth, and therefore, they should live by that. Unfortunately, it is such a sad lie that our world is pushing on people. It completely disregards what God has intended for His creation and distorts what the real truth about God is.

As we start to see that “living our truth” is a lie from the enemy, the next question for us becomes, what then is the truth? It is a question that has been asked since God first created man in the garden. We saw Adam and Eve question the truth of God when the serpent tempted them in Genesis 3:1 by asking, “Did God actually say…” Pontius Pilate had the same question when Jesus was brought before him. John 18:37-38 says, “Then Pilate said to him, ‘So you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world - to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.’ Pilate said to him ‘What is truth?’” Thankfully, we know where the truth comes from and how we can walk in the truth.

If we go back one chapter earlier to John chapter 17, we will see another amazing promise that Jesus gives to us about the truth. John 17:17 reads, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” One of the biggest blessings we have as followers of Christ living in the world today is the complete Word of God. Everything we need to know God, follow God, cherish God, obey God, and find the salvation God has provided can be found in the Bibles we have. It is the complete, inerrant, inspired Word of God.

In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Paul writes, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” This is such a foundational truth for our walk with Christ. If we do not believe that all of Scripture is the Word of God, even the parts we have a hard time understanding or agreeing with, then why follow it? We cannot pick and choose what we like within the Word of God and follow the lie of this world that we are to “live our truth.” Jesus makes His claim very boldly and right to the point. He says, “Your word is truth.” Let us hold fast to this truth, and let us be molded by Scripture day after day so that we may be equipped for every good work that God puts in front of us.
