Lesson Two | Intention Versus Outcome
Devotion 5: New Heart
Pastor Keaton Washburn

What is the oldest thing you can think of? Is it a person or a place? How old is the item?

If you could have anything new, what would it be? Would it be a new toy, bike, or friend?

Read 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

This verse shows us the truth that followers of Jesus change when they give their lives to Him. A follower of Christ goes from being someone who cannot trust their heart to someone whose heart knows how to trust God. The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the church and has one of the craziest stories of this type of heart change. Acts chapter 9 tells us that before Paul became a Christian, his name was Saul, and he was out to kill Christians. He hated the message of Jesus and Jesus’ followers. He was not a very kind man. Then, while Paul was on his way to find and kill Christians, God shined a light on him from the sky and spoke to him. Paul was blinded and led to a follower of Jesus named Ananias, who preached the Gospel to him. Paul was saved and baptized. He then became a preacher and church planter and wrote almost half of the New Testament. Talk about a heart change! Like Paul, we also get a new heart when we choose to follow Jesus as our Lord.

What are some things that your heart desires? Do those things honor God?

Have you turned from your sin and chosen to follow Jesus as the Lord of your life? If so, how has your heart changed? (Mom or Dad, this is a great opportunity for you to share your testimony!)

Family Prayer: Pray as a family that God would give each of you the desires of His heart. Also, pray that you would seek after the things that God is after like love, joy, and justice.
