Devotion 6: I Can Only Imagine

Cathy Story

The other day our children said, “We are going to draw what Heaven looks like!” We chuckled and told them to go for it, draw what they think Heaven will look like. The white paper and yellow crayons came out and their best ideas of Heaven were created with all of their childlike imagination. I typically do not consider myself strong in arts and crafts, or spatial sense. If someone tries to describe to me what something will look like, or how we could move something to look different, I try my best to cut them off as quickly as possible and explain that I really just cannot imagine what they are trying to say to me. Unless I see it, I struggle to imagine what something will look like! Had I chosen to draw with my children, I probably would have created yellow arches and streets too.

While there are many aspects of Heaven we will have to patiently wait to discover, there are a few things we can know with certainty and excitement! Revelation 21:4 writes, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” For these reasons, we can rejoice! We can look forward to the day and time when we finally get to see and experience all of Heaven in its glory! In the meantime, we wait, tell others, and prepare for that day.

When it comes to gift giving, I can hardly contain myself. I tend to have to shop at the last minute because once I have the gift, I am ready to give it! When getting a gift, I can wait; but giving a gift causes too much excitement at what the response will be. In this meantime of waiting for Heaven, I want to wait with that same eager expectation. You can question yourself along with me, do you live with such eager expectation that you cannot help but share about the goodness of God and who He is? Think about who you may be able to gift with the message of Jesus dying for them on the cross. Who can you think of that may be able to join you in eager expectation of what Heaven will be like.
