Devotion 4: God Gives New Mercies Each Day
Cathy Story
How often do you think about what you think about? It is kind of a funny question, right? Yet, in all honesty, how often do you analyze, put in check, or realign your own thoughts? Our minds are wonderful and complex, and something I will not pretend to have an in-depth understanding of, but also something that, when left unchecked, can spiral completely out of control!
Maybe you have caught yourself running a situation through your mind over and over again, trying to figure it out. Maybe you make up how a conversation will or will not go, trying to come up with the perfect words to say. Maybe you replay everything you did or said and wonder what in the world you were thinking. Maybe you turn to the Word of God and listen to what He says. Although I am not sure that should be a maybe, it should be a definitely, certainly, or without a doubt.
Lamentations 3:21 writes, “But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope.” That statement, “But this I call to mind,” is saying, I remembered this, or my mind was drawn back to something. So, what was it that was remembered and brought this hope? Lamentations 3:22-23 continues on to say, “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
Coming back to your thought patterns, how often do you “call to mind” the promises of God? We can be filled with hope when we recall that God’s love and mercies are new every single day. They do not run out. He does not get tired of us, and we cannot return to the well too many times. We can rest in knowing that day in and day out, our God has been faithful. He is faithful, and he will continue to be faithful.
Next time you find your thoughts trying to spin out of control, try to “call to mind” the promises of God and let your hope be renewed. If you do not yet feel like you know God’s Word enough to always recall it to mind right now, there are other steps you can take. Write God’s promises down and post them around your house, or type a note on your phone that you can open up and read. Until God’s Words and His promises become so ingrained in your mind that you recall them by memory, take steps to recall them by sight.
