Lesson Four | What Is Passed On
Devotion 4: Following God No Matter What
Pastor Gary Wright

Hebrews 11:8–10 says, “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.”

Imagine if God promised you and your family land in a foreign country. By faith, as a family, you had to obediently move to this foreign land. Your family would leave all your relatives, friends, and everything you knew behind. Also, imagine that in your lifetime and in the lifetime of your children, you never got to this land. You live the rest of your lives as campers, moving from place to place in a foreign land.

That is what happened to Abraham and his family. God called Abraham to move his family to a foreign land and leave everything they knew behind. God promised that someday, this land would be his family’s land. The land became known as the Promised Land. Abraham and his family trusted God, and by the faith they had in God, they moved. Even though Abraham never fully saw this land, God did keep His promise, and Abraham’s descendants would receive the land that God had promised. Abraham and his family never saw God’s promise fully fulfilled in their lifetime. Amazingly, that did not keep them from trusting God; they followed God no matter what. By faith, they looked forward to someday being in Heaven with God instead of camping in a foreign land.

How would you rate your trust in God as a family on a scale of 1 to 10? (1 being the least, 10 being the greatest)

Are there circumstances in your family that make it hard to trust God?

What are some things that you as a family trust more than you trust God?

Abraham and his family were campers in a foreign land looking forward to Heaven. How does that resemble us as a Christian family now?

What are some concrete steps we could take as a family to follow God no matter what?

Family Prayer: Heavenly Father, Lord, we love You. Lord, we thank You for always keeping Your promises. Sometimes in life, our circumstances can be so difficult and we can grow impatient waiting on You. Lord, sometimes in these situations we want to trust ourselves more than You. Forgive us for not fully trusting in You. Lord, we ask You for patience in these hard times. Remind us to turn to Your Word in these circumstances and look at all the promises You have kept. Lord, help us to remember that if we know You as Savior, this earth is not our home, we are just campers. Help us to focus on eternity with You and give us the strength to trust and follow You no matter what. Lord, we thank You and praise You. In Jesus name, Amen.
