Lesson Two | Intention Versus Outcome
Devotion 4: Flashlights
Pastor Keaton Washburn

I must admit, I am a little bit obsessed with flashlights. For multiple years in a row, I asked for flashlights for my birthday, and each year, I got them. My house is filled with those flashlights! There is one in the kitchen, the bedroom, the basement, in each of my camping bins, and one in each of our cars. I am a bit obsessed, but I do not want to be left in the dark if the power goes out!

Do you have a flashlight ready around your house? If so, where do you keep it? Have you had to use it?

Like the need for flashlights, the Bible tells us of the importance of light when walking in the dark.

Read Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

What is God’s Word described as? How do we find God’s words?

How does God’s Word act as a light for us?

When we try to go through life without a light, we end up fumbling and stumbling over things as if we were trying to walk through our house in the dark. We bump into things, take wrong turns, and we might even knock some things over. To help us see clearly, God has shown us how to live by giving us the Bible. Now, we have to read it, study it, and memorize it so that His Word can guide us!

Family Activity - As a family, collect the following supplies:
• A box that you can cut some holes into
• Scissors (Be safe)
• A flashlight
• A Bible

Step 1. Cut two holes in a box with your scissors. One hole is to look through and the other is for a flashlight to shine through.

Step 2. Put the Bible in the center of the box and turn the lights off. Take turns trying to see the Bible in the dark box. Then, shine the flashlight in the box on the Bible.

Step 3. Discuss as a family: Was it easier to see the Bible with the light on or off?

Just as the flashlight helps us see the Bible, God’s Word helps us understand and see the path that God has for us.
