Devotion 6: He is Faithful

“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.” Hebrews 10:23

There are seasons in life when hope feels fragile. When our prayers seem unanswered, when circumstances shake us, and when our emotions cannot carry the weight of what we’re walking through. In those moments, Hebrews gives us both an anchor and an invitation.

Scripture echoes this truth from beginning to end. “Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations”(Deuteronomy 7:9). One of my favorite verses is in Lamentations 3:22–23: “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” And 2 Timothy 2:13 says, “If we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself.” God’s faithfulness is not dependent on our performance, our understanding, or even our feelings. It flows from who He is.

During my battle with cancer, this truth became more than theology; it became survival. There were days I didn’t “feel” God’s love. I didn’t understand why I had to walk that road. My prayers for healing felt heavy. The uncertainty was real, but even when I couldn’t feel Him, I believed Him. We see that in 2 Corinthians 5:7, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” Faith meant trusting what I knew to be true about God’s character, even when my emotions lagged behind.

There is a stability in God’s faithfulness. Feelings rise and fall. Circumstances shift. Diagnoses change. But “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). Even in the valley, Psalm 23 reminds us, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” His presence is steady. His promises are secure.

We must not forget that God’s faithfulness does not guarantee we will always get the job, the healing, the spouse, the children, or everything we long for. It does not mean every valley will be removed or every mountain made easy. There will be seasons when, like Thomas, we want tangible proof. Thomas said, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails… I will never believe” (John 20:25). When Jesus came to him, He gently invited him closer, “Put your finger here, and see my hands… Do not disbelieve, but believe” (John 20:27). Thomas was invited to trace the scars, the visible reminder of Christ’s finished work. In our own seasons of doubt or disappointment, we may not be able to trace God’s hand in our circumstances, but we can look to the cross. The cross stands as lasting proof of His love and faithfulness.
