Devotion 6: Do You See the Opportunity?

Opportunity is a heavy word. By definition, according to the great Google, opportunity is a “set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something.” Every day, we are met with circumstances that present a new chance for a potential outcome. That circumstance or opportunity can have an endless number of possible outcomes or end results. We will all step into these circumstances and opportunities to either serve ourselves or to serve the Lord.

In Galatians 1:10, we read, “For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.” Whenever we talk about gathering as a church, it is important for us to keep focus on the why. If we are gathering together to simply appease ourselves and our needs, or if we are gathering together to appease a pastor or church, we are missing the mark. Here, Paul is calling us to refocus and have the proper mindset as we gather and seize opportunities to gather with the body! We simply gather to please the Lord and to align ourselves with His will.

Hebrews 10:23-25 reads, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” As we gather, we are called to stir one another to good works and love. However, if we do so, trying to please ourselves or man, we will miss the mark.

Each day, we are given new opportunities. Will you use these circumstances and opportunities to please the Lord or to please man? Will you encourage and stir up one another in the Lord or towards self?
