Devotion #4: He Overcomes the World
Cathy Story

Have you ever found yourself caught feeling saddened or afraid of the direction the world is going? We can hardly turn on the news or simply scroll through our social media feeds without being reminded of some aspect of just how fallen our world is. At times it may even feel difficult to figure out how we should best navigate the brokenness around us.

As with anything negative or positive we may face, we can and should turn to God’s Word for hope and truth. Romans 8:9-11 provides a powerful encouragement for us as believers: “You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.”

We are reminded that when we have truly accepted Jesus Christ as our Savior, the Spirit of God (Holy Spirit) lives inside of us! The hope that we have in Jesus cannot be taken away by the brokenness and fallen state of the world. These few verses remind us that if Christ is in us, meaning if we have genuinely accepted Him into our hearts and lives, then the Spirit of God dwells within us as well.

Therefore, when the brokenness of this world wants to try and steal our hope, when we are in Christ, we can rest in His peace. We can rest knowing His Spirit continues to live in us, leading, guiding, and directing us. We are able to have hope that the things of this world are temporary, and that a day is coming when we will be able to be with God Himself!
