Devotion #4: Devoted To The Right Things
We all want to grow spiritually, right? However, sometimes, spiritual growth feels like one of those New Year’s resolutions that starts strong and then fizzles out by February. Maybe we read our Bible for a few days, pray a little more, and then life gets busy, distractions come, and suddenly we are back where we started.
So, how do we actually grow? Acts 2:42 gives us a simple but powerful answer, “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”
This verse describes the early church right after Pentecost, where thousands of people came to faith in Jesus. What did they do next? They devoted themselves to four key things:
Notice the word “devoted.” They did not treat these things as optional. They were committed. They built their lives around these habits, and as a result, they grew spiritually.
Jesus laid out a similar blueprint in Matthew 28:19-20, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Jesus calls us to be disciples (followers who grow) and to “make disciples” (help others grow). That means spiritual growth is not just about us. It is about bringing others along on the journey.
So, how do we grow spiritually? We need to stay devoted to the Word, community, worship, and prayer. Also, we should not keep it to ourselves. We need to help others grow, too. Spiritual growth is not about trying harder; it is about staying connected to Jesus and His people.
Here is the challenge: Are you devoted to the right things? What is one step you can take today to grow? Maybe it is committing to a Bible reading plan, joining a Growth Community, or deepening your prayer life. Whatever it is, take that step and trust that God will grow you as you stay connected to Him. Let us grow together!
