Devotion 3: You Are the Light
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Matthew 5:14). Jesus didn’t say, “Try to be the light.” He said, “You are the light.” That matters. If you follow Jesus, His light already lives in you. You don’t have to earn it. You don’t have to be loud or bold or have all the right words. You don’t have to stand on a stage or preach a sermon. You simply carry His light wherever you go.
Think about light for a minute. Light doesn’t argue with darkness. It doesn’t chase it away with force. It just shows up and darkness loses its power. A small lamp can change an entire room. That’s what Jesus is talking about here. Reaching others doesn’t always look like handing someone a Bible or saying the perfect gospel speech. A lot of the time, it looks like kindness when someone expects judgment, patience when someone else is difficult, hope when the world feels heavy, and grace when people mess up.
Light shows people what God is like. When you live with love, people notice. When you forgive, people notice. When you stay steady in hard seasons, people notice. They may not say it out loud, but they see something different, and that “something” points them to Jesus.
Jesus also reminds us, “A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” That means your faith was never meant to be private and tucked away. It doesn’t mean you force it on others, but it does mean you don’t hide who you belong to. You live openly as someone who has been changed by grace. The good news of the Gospel is this: Jesus came for sinners, not perfect people. He rescued us when we couldn’t rescue ourselves. Now He lets us shine His light so others can find the same hope.
So, don’t overthink it! Ask God to help you shine right where you are—at home, at work, at the store, with your friends, and even with strangers. Your light might be exactly what someone else needs to find their way to Him. Just shine. God will do the rest.
