Devotion 3: We Do Not Fight Alone
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:10–12
Spiritual warfare during Christmas may seem like a strange concept. After all, this is a season of joy, celebration, and time spent with loved ones. Yet, the reality is that spiritual warfare during Christmas is very real. From Genesis chapter 3 to the birth of Christ, we see that Satan is a cunning adversary determined to destroy mankind. There seems to be no better time to attack God’s people than during a season dedicated to celebrating the birth of his greatest enemy, Jesus, the Messiah.
In Ephesians 6:12, Paul reminds the church in Ephesus, and ultimately all believers today, that our struggle is not against flesh and blood. Our enemy is far greater than what we can see with our eyes. This is not a mere physical battle. We are up against the forces of darkness and the schemes of the devil himself.
However, this reality should not fill us with fear or confusion about Christmas. Instead, it should call us to be watchful, prayerful, and spiritually armed. During this festive and joyful season, we must put on the full armor of God and be ready to stand firm in our faith, always prepared to give a defense for the Gospel.
As I write this, I am reminded of the song I sang as a child: “I’m in the Lord’s Army” (“Yes, Sir!”). The words still echo in my mind, and they capture an essential truth about the Christian life. We are engaged in a great spiritual battle. Yet, we do not fight alone. The Lord has equipped and strengthened us for this war against sin, giving us everything we need to stand victorious in Him.
As we go through this Christmas season, “be strong in the Lord and in strength of his might.” Remember that the Lord is with us, and the battle has already been won.
