Devotion #1: Walking in the Spirit
Jasmyn Bicknell

“For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” Romans 8:13

Often in Scripture, we are called to live by the Spirit, not by the flesh or of the world. In 1 John 2:15, we read that if we love the world, the Father’s love is not in us. Paul tells us to walk by the Spirit in order to not follow the flesh’s desire because the Spirit’s desire goes against the flesh’s desire (Galatians 5:16-17). These are just a couple of examples, including Romans, that give us reasons for walking in the Spirit, not the flesh.

I believe the importance of repeating this idea in Scripture is to show that the Bible does not contradict itself. It backs itself. Also, it is reiterated because the temptations of the world are strong. We are easily influenced by the media, peers, work environment, and close circle of friends. There are so many factors that come into play when it comes to what drives our decisions. If we are only surrounding ourselves with people who take part in fleshly desires and things that go against God’s Word, we are more likely to give into those things as well. However, if we have a strong foundation of friends and family who are in the Word daily, lifting each other up in prayer and encouragement, and confidants that will help guide us toward Christ, we are equipping ourselves to fight against the temptations of sin. Our strength is found in Christ; nothing can take that from us.

The more time we spend with God, the stronger that relationship becomes. You will notice yourself becoming more thankful, loving, gracious, and joyful. Others will start to notice as well and wonder where it is coming from. That opens the door for you to share that your joy comes from the Lord!
