Devotion 1: “Worthy of My Song”

Cathy Story

In Revelation chapter 5, we are reminded of how worthy Jesus is of our praise. Revelation 5:9-10 writes, “And they sang a new song, saying, ‘Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign forever on the earth.’” When I think of the word “worthy” my mind goes to being deserving of something. These verses remind us that Jesus was slain for us, and because of His blood (death, burial, and resurrection), we are able to be saved.

Recently the song “Worthy of My Song (Worthy of it All)” by Phil Wickham, has provided a great reminder of just how worthy God is of our praise. The lyrics in the bridge of the song say,

And in the blessing, in the pain, You are worthy

Whether You say ‘yes’ or ‘no,’ or ‘wait,’ You are worthy

Through it all, I choose to say, ‘You are worthy’

I’ll never stop singing Your praise, No I’ll never stop singing Your praise

And when I finally see Your face, I’ll cry worthy

And when You wipe these tears away, I’ll cry worthy

Above every other name, You are worthy

I’ll never stop singing Your praise, No I’ll never stop singing Your praise

While our head knowledge of the fact that Jesus is worthy of our praise is often there, it can be difficult to always get our hearts to align with what our minds know! While it is unnatural to think that in the middle of a struggle we would stop and remind ourselves of how worthy our God is, the reality is, He is worthy. Jesus being worthy does not mean we will not experience any more hurts or pains at this time, but one day those pains of this world will be gone.

Revelation 5:13 says, “And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, ‘To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” There will be a time when we finally see His face and cry, “Worthy!” Maybe you are in a spot today where crying worthy is difficult for you to do. No matter what circumstances you are facing today, I would encourage you to take a few minutes to look up both the lyrics to this song and the song to listen to. Take time to read and listen to the words, and remind yourself of just how worthy our God is!
