Lesson Two | Intention Versus Outcome
Devotion 3: The Beauty of a Covenant
Pastor Keaton Washburn

Read Genesis 9:11-17.

Like God making a covenant with Abram in Genesis chapter 12 and chapter 15, God also made other covenants. After the great flood, God promised Noah and all people of all time that He would never again flood the whole earth. The amazing truth about a covenant is that it is not like a contract where if one person messes up, then the whole deal is over. A covenant is a promise given by someone independent of the other person’s actions. So, no matter what we do, because God gave us this covenant, He will never break it! Not only did God make this covenant, but He also gave a sign of this covenant to serve as a reminder of His promise: the rainbow.

What do you think it would have been like to be on the ark with Noah and his family, seeing God flood the whole earth?

When was the last time you saw a rainbow? What did the rainbow come after?

Like God’s covenant with Noah and all mankind, there is another promise of God in Hebrews 13:5-6, “For he [God] has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we can confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?’” God is in complete control. He has kept every promise, and He will continue to keep His promises because that is who He is!

Family Activity: Draw a picture as a family of Noah and his family. Put the ark in the background with a beautiful rainbow. It is a reminder of God’s covenant and promise, both to Noah and to Christians today.
