Our Work Matters
Lesson Three • The Promise to Return
Devotion 4: Our Work Matters
Rich Sawicki
“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:58
This verse gives us a powerful reminder that our hard work for God is never wasted. Let us break it down and look at what it means for us today.
Stay Strong
Paul starts by calling us “beloved brothers” (and sisters, too). He is talking to all of us who believe Jesus is God and that He died on the cross for our sins, rose again, and is alive today. Paul says, “Be steadfast.” This means we should stay strong in our faith. Imagine you are a tree with deep roots. When a big storm comes, the tree bends but does not fall because its roots hold it steady. That is how our faith should be - strong and steady.
Do Not Get Distracted
Paul then says to be “immovable.” This means not letting anything push or pull us away from following Jesus. Life can be full of distractions and tough times. Sometimes, we might feel like giving up when things get hard or when it seems like our efforts are not making a difference. Yet, Paul tells us to keep going.
Give Your Best to God’s Work
Paul also says we should be “always abounding in the work of the Lord.” This means doing our best in whatever we do for God. Whether it is helping others, being kind, or sharing God’s love, we should do it with our whole hearts. Think about how you feel when you do something you are really proud of, like finishing a big project or helping a friend. That is how we should feel about our work for God - excited and committed.
Your Efforts Are Not Wasted
Now, here is the best part. Paul promises us that “in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” This means everything we do for God matters. Sometimes, it might seem like no one notices or cares about the good things we do, but God sees it all. He values every effort we make.
Think about planting a seed. When you plant it, you do not see it grow right away. However, with time, it becomes a beautiful tree. In the same way, the good things we do might not show results immediately, but they are growing and making a difference, often in ways we cannot see yet.
Keep Going
So, what can we take away from this verse? First, stay strong in your faith. Do not let anything shake you. Keep focused on following Jesus, no matter what distractions come your way. Give your best to whatever you do for God. Finally, remember that your efforts are not wasted. God sees everything you do and promises that it matters.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for the promise that our work for You is never in vain. Help us stay strong and focused, giving our best in everything we do for You. Remind us that You see our efforts and that they matter. Fill us with hope and confidence as we serve You each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
