“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” Colossians 2:6-7

I am by no means a gardener. The closest I have ever come was an experiment in high school biology class - which I am pretty sure I failed! However, the concept of being rooted and growing roots is an essential part of growth and endurance. Paul writes in Colossians 2:6-7, “Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” Paul begins with the essential foundation of our faith, receiving Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. It is acknowledging His sacrifice on the cross for our sins, burial, and glorious resurrection, through which we are saved and reconciled to the Lord! Yet it does not stop there. Once we receive Christ, we become His children as we are reminded in John 1:12. Not only His children, but we enter into an incredible family and team of believers, our brothers and sisters in Christ.

This is where the roots come in. We must grow. We must desire to walk in the words of Christ, not simply sit and receive knowledge - but to truly live it out. Then as we actively seek Him, grow in Him, encourage others, and challenge one another in Him, those roots deepen. Our foundation in Him becomes stronger, our roots are spread deeper, and when the difficulty of this world hits, we are unshaken because of the foundation and family around us.

So, as you continue in your day, ask yourself, “Am I rooted?” Are you truly growing, allowing the Word to penetrate your life so that you did not simply receive the Lord out of a case of fear or desire to be a part of a special team? Hopefully, you are truly allowing His word to grow in you, allowing it to take action in your life, and locking arms with your heavenly family to be rooted together and grow together in Him.
