Lesson One | Family Done Differently
Devotion 1: Family Established by Faith
Stephen Billings

“The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.’ So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there. Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land.” Genesis 12:1-6 (NIV)

In Genesis chapter 12, God gives clear instructions to Abraham to move. God says, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.” God had special plans for Abraham and his family. Those plans began with Abraham making a choice. He had to decide whether he was going to obey God when God told him to move. Was he going to trust that God had his best interest in mind?

Faith is having complete trust in someone or something. Abraham demonstrated his faith in God by being obedient. Abraham moved to Harran because of his faith in God.

God promised Abraham that He would make him into a great nation, give him a great name, and provide blessings for his family. God promised all this to Abraham because He had a special plan for His one and only Son to come from the line of Abraham.

If God told you to move to another country, state, or city, would you do it?

Why is it hard to move from one place to another?

What blessings has God given you and your family?

Family Prayer: God, thank You for all the blessings You have given our family. I pray that we can be obedient to You just as Abraham was obedient. In Your name, Amen.
