Do You Know the Truth?

Devotion 2: Do You Know the Truth?
Pastor Gary Wright
“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” John 14:6
In John 14:6, Jesus promises that He is the truth. A great example of truth happened while I was preparing this devotion. My wife Kim and I were two days away from a week of vacation in East Tawas. The trip had been planned for a year, and we were really looking forward to getting away. While I was writing, I received a call from work asking if I could work two days of our vacation. As much as I would have loved to help out, I knew the truth. The truth is that my wife would have killed me if I left her at the vacation rental and went home to work for two days. I am sure many of you can relate.
In John 13:37, Jesus is on trial before Pontius Pilate. Jesus says to Pilate, “I have come into the world - to bear witness to the truth.” Pilate asked Jesus in John 18:38, “What is truth?” This is the same question people still ask today. In Greek, the definition of truth refers to it as “divine revelation,” and it is related to a word that means “what cannot be hidden.” The Hebrew definition of truth is “firmness, constancy, and duration.” “Gotquestions.org” says such a definition implies an everlasting substance and something that can be relied upon. The truth simply means telling it like it is, the way things really are, and that any other viewpoint is wrong.
When Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me,” He is telling us the way things really are. No one comes to the Father except through Jesus. That is the truth and any other viewpoint is wrong! What we do with that truth determines our eternal destiny.
The truth is reality. When it came to our vacation, the reality was if I would have left Kim for a couple of days to go to work, she would have been hurt and disappointed.
When it comes to Jesus’ proclamation of the truth, the reality is that no one is going to be forgiven of their sin, nor will they get to spend eternity with the Father in Heaven, without putting their faith in Jesus.
The Bible describes each of us in Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” In Romans 6:23, we learn that there is some bad news and some good news. The bad news is our sin has a price; it is death or separation from God, “For the wages of sin is death.” The good news is that Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for our sins, “But the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Jesus is the Truth. Have you put your faith in Him?
Salvation is promised through Jesus, but it is only through Him. Romans 10:9 adds, “Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
