Devotion #2: The Spirit Sets Us Free
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1
Have you ever had a moment when you felt like you had messed up so badly there was no going back? Maybe you told a lie you regretted, or you did something you knew was not right, and you felt that guilt just sitting on your shoulders. It is like carrying around a heavy backpack filled with rocks that gets heavier with every mistake.
Well, here is some amazing news: Jesus has taken that backpack off of you and He put it on his back! He has taken away the guilt, the shame, and the “I messed up again” feeling. Romans 8:1 tells us that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. That means God is not pointing a finger at us saying, “Look at what you did!” Instead, He opens His arms wide and says, “You are free!”
How can we be free? It is through the Holy Spirit. When we accept Jesus into our lives, God’s Spirit moves in. He is there to help us, guide us, and remind us that we are no longer stuck under the weight of our mistakes. The Spirit tells us, “You are free. You are forgiven. You are loved.”
Imagine a courtroom. You are standing before a judge, and the list of everything you have ever done wrong is there on the table. It is a long list, and it is embarrassing. However, before anything can happen, Jesus walks in, takes that list, and says, “I have taken care of this.” Then He looks at you and says, “You are free to go.” That is what the Spirit does for us every day! He reminds us that Jesus has paid the price, and we are not guilty anymore.
Here is the best part: living free does not mean we just go out and do whatever we want. The Spirit gives us the strength to make choices that honor God, to love others, and to live a life that reflects Jesus. It is not about perfection; it is about freedom to grow and live without fear of messing up. The Spirit sets us free from fear, shame, and condemnation.
So, next time you feel weighed down by guilt or worry, remember that the Spirit is whispering, “You are free.” Let go of that heavy backpack. Jesus has taken care of it. You are forgiven, loved, and ready to live in the freedom He has given you.
