Lesson Two • Gather
Devotion #2: A People Together
Pastor Justin Dean

A Gallup study found that 56% of Christians say they attend church less than once a month, with 33% saying they seldom or never attend. How can we be built up for God’s purpose as the body of Christ when over half of our body is simply gone? As believers, it is crucial that we regularly gather together as the body of Christ.

How often do you attend a Gathering? Why?

Acts 1:14 says, “All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.”

One of the key words in this verse is the word “together.” They could all pray individually, but something unique was happening because they were doing it together. Our spiritual walks are not meant to be an individual hike, but a trek together.

We are called sojourners, or travelers, as we travel through our lives in a fallen world on our way to glory in Heaven with God. In biblical times, everyone knew that traveling alone was one of the quickest ways to get yourself robbed or killed. If they could help it, they would never travel alone but together in a group or in multiple groups. With that in mind, it should inform us of how we should walk our spiritual journeys, not alone but together.

When was a time in your life when you were glad you were not alone? What happened?

It is crucial that we make gathering together as believers a major priority in our lives. We must be careful that we do not allow things like our kids’ sports, work, business, or anything else to take priority over gathering as the church. If we say that our relationship with God is important to us, then gathering as God’s people must be important to us. We cannot go alone.

Has there ever been a time in your life when you gave up gathering with the church? What happened? How did it work out?

Take some time to pray and thank God for the community of believers. Ask God to continue to deepen your relationship with Him and with your brothers and sisters in Christ.
