Devotion #1: Justice and Mercy
In Romans 3:25, Paul explains a captivating truth about God’s character: His righteousness collides with His divine forbearance. Paul says, “Whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.”
To fully appreciate this, we must explore what it means to be in the right relationship with God and others and why these two qualities matter so much.
“Righteousness” signifies being in a right standing with God. It reflects His perfection and calls us to align our lives with His loving will. When we embrace God’s righteousness through faith in the Gospel, our lives are transformed. Our past mistakes are washed away, and we step into a relationship filled with grace.
“Forbearance” embodies patience and self-control, especially when faced with wrongdoing. God was so generous to send Jesus to rescue us. We are repeat offenders against God, yet He gives us time to repent and turn back to Him instead of rushing to judgment. When things get messy, forbearance is the ability to overlook offenses and give others the same mercy God gives us.
At first glance, the combination of righteousness and forbearance might seem contradictory. Righteousness insists on justice, while forbearance leads to mercy. Yet, in God’s faultless nature, these qualities coexist beautifully. His righteousness does not diminish His mercy; it magnifies it. By practicing forbearance, God opens the door to redemption, reminding us that true justice is rooted in love.
As we soak in this profound truth, we are called to mirror these qualities in our earthly relationships. This means striving for fairness while also embracing patience and forgiveness. Instead of responding in self-righteousness, we are invited to approach others with understanding and grace.
In our daily lives, let us strive to embody this beautiful balance. When we encounter wrongdoing, we can respond with righteousness by choosing to practice forbearance, creating a space for growth and healing.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for the beautiful way Your righteousness and forbearance come together. Help me to embody these qualities in my relationships, extending grace and patience to others just as You have done for me. May my life be a radiant reflection of Your love and mercy! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
