Devotion #1: Freedom
Grant Grimes

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1

“Oh, freedom!” Aretha Franklin’s song “Think” echoes in my mind as I read this powerful verse. For those in Christ Jesus, there is true freedom - freedom from condemnation. Many people do not fully grasp the incredible victory this short verse represents for Christians.

Sin has severed our unity with the Father, leaving us condemned in the heavenly court to pay the penalty of death. Yet, this verse proclaims the glorious verdict: for believers, there is no condemnation. Jesus, in His mercy and grace, took upon Himself the punishment we deserved. The debt has been paid in full.

When we reflect on this verse, we should feel overjoyed - motivated to change and to live a life worthy of the Gospel, inspired by the magnitude of what Jesus has done. Sadly, many take this truth for granted, viewing Jesus as a kind of spiritual credit card, swiping away His grace while continuing in the very sin He died to free us from. I challenge us to remember this verse daily. Let us pray for hearts full of gratitude and a commitment to live in a way that honors the freedom we have received.

We must meditate on the significance of Jesus’ sacrifice, refusing to let sin cling to us with shame and regret. Instead, let us hold on to the hope this verse provides. Jesus has paid it all, and we owe everything to Him.
